Fifth Annual Michael J. Berkeley
Memorial Golf Tournament
October 2, 2006

The 2006 Michael J. Berkeley Foundation Tournament was another tremendous success. As in years past we were blessed with a beautiful sun drenched day, albeit the sun shone just a little less bright because of the passing of Mike's mom Audrey, or as Mike called her "Coiffe." Audrey was a beautiful, charming, caring soul whose spirit and warmth will always be with us.

To honor her memory the first Audrey P. Berkeley Spirit Award was presented to Marilyn F. Booker. Marilyn embodies Audrey's spirit, strong moral character and dedication to her family and friends. Thank you Audrey for showing us what should be done, and thank you Marilyn for showing us it can be done.

Once again, the site for our fifth installment of the MJB Memorial Golf Tournament were the two challenging championship courses at the Westchester Country Club in Harrison, New York. As always, the golfers went at the courses with everything they had. In most instances the courses won, although you wouldn't know it from the conversations in the clubhouse.

Notwithstanding the clubhouse conversations, the highlight of the event, as always, was the awarding of the scholarships. This year 18 young, minority women and men were each awarded a $3000 scholarship, the largest single group of MJB Scholarship winners to date. The 2006 MJB Scholarship class comprises future leaders from eleven states with areas of study that include business, political science, pre-med and molecular biology. They are a diverse group with two things in common; love of golf and their personification of the values and virtues that Mike exemplified throughout his life. The fact that the pool of winners is getting larger and larger stands as a testament to Mike and the impact he had on those who met him and those who have heard his story.

For a second year, participants enjoyed the silent art auction with beautiful artwork by our artist partners Alonzo Adams, Willie Baez, Alvin Clayton, Eric Berkeley, Jason Berkeley, and debuting this year, James Adair.

Congratulations to our scholars, board of directors, sponsors, donors, and participants; because of you, the 2006 Michael J. Berkeley Foundation Tournament was big and it's getting bigger. As Mike would say, "Don't sleep..." 2007 is on the way. See you there.
